Founded by Memphis homebuilder Kemmons Wilson (founder of Holiday Inn) in the 1960s as a residential subdivision of starter homes "south of Whitehaven," Tennessee, hence "Southaven." Incorporated in 1980. Now the third-most populous municipality in Mississippi.
