A bit of Hernando history

Settled in 1832 as "Jefferson," renamed and incorporated as Hernando in 1836 in honor of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who reportedly crossed the Mississippi River nearby in 1541. County seat of DeSoto County. Remained an agricultural town of ~2,000 through the 1970s; population doubled in the 1990s.
