A bit of South City history
Historic Black neighborhood in south Downtown Memphis centered on Vance Avenue and Foote Park, defined by the South City Strong neighborhood plan. The area was the site of the former Foote Homes public housing complex (built 1940), the last of Memphis's large family public-housing projects, which was demolished in 2018 under a $30 million Choice Neighborhoods grant. Per <a href="https://choosememphis.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Downtown Memphis Commission</a>, the South City redevelopment is replacing concentrated low-income housing with a mixed-income community including the Robert R. Church Park Senior Living complex and the new Foote Park at South City.
