Twin North Memphis neighborhoods established in the late nineteenth century. Klondike takes its name from the 1896 Klondike Gold Rush; <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_City,_Memphis" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Smokey City</a> earned its name from the dense industrial and railroad smoke that hung over the area from the surrounding factories and the Illinois Central rail yards. Both have been historically Black working-class neighborhoods, served by the Klondike-Smokey City Community Development Corporation since 1990.
